Accelerating the Translation of Cell Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes

ARMI | BioFabUSA will participate in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases workshop, “Accelerating the Translation of Cell Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes,” taking place September 22–23, 2026, at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
The public workshop will bring together leaders from government, academia, industry and patient organizations to discuss best practices and recommendations for advancing the next generation of cell-replacement therapies for type 1 diabetes. Sessions will address nonclinical studies, manufacturing and quality considerations, clinical trial design and opportunities for collaboration in an AI-powered data environment.
Tom Bollenbach, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer at ARMI, serves on the workshop planning committee and will moderate “Challenges and Opportunities in Manufacturing Cell-Replacement Therapies” on September 22. The session will examine early-stage chemistry, manufacturing and controls considerations, process and analytical development, and large-scale manufacturing of cell therapies.
On September 23, Bollenbach will also co-moderate “Collaborations in an Artificial Intelligence-Powered Big Data Era,” focused on opportunities for pre-competitive collaboration, data science, AI and machine learning to help address shared challenges in cell-replacement therapy development.
The workshop is organized by NIDDK with participation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Breakthrough T1D, academic researchers and industry leaders.
